How Is Personal Care Different Than Skilled Nursing?

Feb 15, 2023

You may hear people speak of Personal Care or skilled nursing and long-term care communities, but do you really know the difference? There are distinct differences between these two living environments. Overall, Personal Care, similar to Assisted Living, is for seniors who may need some help or care with daily living but are overall healthier and more capable than those in a skilled nursing or long-term care community.

Type of Care Provided – Daily Living Activities; Not a Medical Care Model
Personal Care communities provide assistance with activities of daily living such as grooming, dressing, dining, and medication management. They do not provide a medical care model such as lifts, full non-ambulatory needs, or advanced feeding.

Type of Home – Apartment; Not a Room
Personal Care provides a private apartment home with private baths and kitchens. The medical care model of a long-term care community is usually a single room, sometimes with a roommate or shared bathroom.

Lifestyle
Personal Care residents are more independent and can come and go as they please from their homes. Many residents can still get around, cook, and take care of pets. These residents also expect a very active calendar of events that stimulate the mind, body and spirit. The right senior living choice can make all the difference.
